FROM STRAW TO gOLD

The Saskatchewan Broomball Association is a Provincial Sport Organization that provides leadership and guidance to develop and promote the sport of Broomball at all skill levels.

What is Broomball?

Broomball is an exhilarating team sport that combines elements of hockey and soccer, played on an ice rink but without skates. Participants wear rubber-soled shoes for better grip and use a broom-shaped stick to maneuver a small ball toward the opposing team's goal. Originating in Canada, this game has grown in popularity worldwide, known for its accessibility and high-energy action. To get ready for broomball, gather the essential equipment: a broomball stick, a helmet, pads for protection, and suitable footwear. Understanding the basic rules and strategies can greatly enhance your experience. Focus on teamwork, communication, and agility to outmaneuver your opponents. Whether you're playing for fun or competition, broomball offers a unique and enjoyable way to stay active and engage in a spirited team sport.

School Clinic Facilitators Needed

Throughout the year the SBA receives requests from schools to facilitate Learn-To-Play Broomball clinics (introduction to the basic skills and rules, equipment, safety, etc.).  These clinics are a great way to expose the sport of Broomball to students and teachers across the province.  However, in the past, it has been somewhat of a struggle to find individuals to facilitate these clinics, and unfortunately not all requests have been filled.

In an effort to establish a larger list of clinic facilitators for this playing year, and for years to come, the SBA has decided to target the following “younger” age group(s) as potential clinic facilitators:

1)      Current U20 players (must be 18 years old or over).

2)      Players that have recently graduated from the U20 age category and are still playing in Mixed or Senior Men’s/Women’s categories.

Not only is this a great opportunity to give something back to the game, but also to earn a bit of money as all clinic facilitators receive an honorarium (around $20-$25/hr) for their time, in addition to a mileage allowance and meal reimbursement (if necessary).  This is an ideal opportunity for post-secondary students as many may be available during school hours to facilitate some school clinics.  What a great way to help pay off some of those student loans.

An added incentive for those applying for the SBA’s Athlete’s Assistance Program – you receive points for facilitating school clinics.

All interested members will be required to attend a Facilitators Training Session which we are hoping will take place in late December (dates TBD).  Depending on registration numbers and where everyone is located, these 1.5 – 2-hour Training Sessions may be hosted in specific locations OR via Zoom.  Everyone will also be required to obtain a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector (CRC-VS). For more information on how to obtain the CRC-VS please contact the SBA office at 306-780-9215 or execdirector@broomball.ca.

Although the SBA is targeting U20 and recent U20 players, it should be noted that ALL SBA members, coaches, and managers are more than welcome to attend the Facilitators Training Session as well.  The more members that are available to visit schools, the better!

Anyone interested must register by Friday December 6, 2024 with the SBA office at 306-780-9215 or email to execdirector@saskbroomball.ca.
